It is a lovely sentiment and thought but not enough people are doing their part to help make this a cleaner world and prevent global warming causes.

Black hole discovered in outer space
A study has confirmed that there is a giant black hole at the centre of our galaxy. German astronomers tracked the movement of twenty eight stars which were circling the centre of the Milky Way using two giant telescopes in Chile. According to reports the super massive black hole weighs four million times heavier than our own sun which is just incredible to try and comprehend.
Black holes are fundamentally objects whose gravitational pull is so incredibly great that nothing – including light – can escape them. The black hole that was found is being dubbed as ‘The Black Pearl’ by the astrologists who found it and they have also explained how galaxies form around giant black holes in the same way that a pearl would form around grit. The Astrologists had pointed out that although the common opinion of black holes is deemed as dangerous they have stated black holes may of had a role in helping to create our galaxy. Not just our own but many galaxies across the vast universe. “They have had a role in bringing matter together and if you had a high enough density of matter then you have the conditions in which stars could form”.
The researchers who discovered the giant space odyssey said the black hole was an incredible 27,000 light years, or 158 thousand, million, million miles from Earth. The most incredible aspect of this lengthy 16 year study is that it has delivered empirical evidence that super massive black holes actually exist. Apparently, the stellar orbits in the galactic centre show that the central mass concentration of four million solar masses must be a super massive black hole, beyond any doubt.
The observations were made using the 3.5m new technology telescope and also the 8.2m very large and powerful telescope in Chile. Both of these magnificent machines are operated by the European Southern Observatory (ESO).

What is Biosecurity?
Biosecurity is the concept of protecting the environment from invasive pests and diseases. Biosecurity covers three areas of intervention - exclusion, eradication, and pest management. These different levels of intervention can be used by themselves or combined effectively to manage any plant or animal pests.
Any plant or animal has the potential to become a pest when introduced to a new environment. The reason is that as you may not know how it will behave in the new environment. In one country a plant could be economically beneficial and in another it can be considered a pest. Gorse is used as boundary and hedge plants in Scotland to great advantage. In the warmer New Zealand climate gorse rampant weed and is a major problem for farmers.
What makes an animal a pest? The possum in New Zealand is a problem as it can attack native plants, like the pohutukawa. It can attack the eggs of some of New Zealand’s endangered bird species. The possum is also a known vector for Bovine Tuberculosis.
Plant species known as invasive species or weeds can out compete, displace and threaten native flora and affect farm pasture. In New Zealand, Gorse is a good example of a plant that affects farm pasture and costs landowners a lot of money to control.
Excluding pests can be achieved on a national scale through legislation for screening and inspection services. This is achievable in some countries like New Zealand and Australia as there are no land borders to control and the distance from other countries reduces the natural spread of animals and plants without human intervention.
Islands, peninsulars and areas with some form of natural border or man made borders can mean that eradication programmes may be successful. A programme to prevent the reintroduction of unwanted plants or animals can be put in place. When looking at physical means of excluding pests, this can be achieved with predator fencing and chemical barriers. Once the barriers are up a programme to remove all current pests within the area can be implemented
Eradication may be the preferred option but may not always be practical to achieve. In these cases pest management control programmes may be the most cost effective way of reducing pest populations and the associated risks. Eradication and pest management plans can be achieved through, mechanical removal, chemical treatment, trapping or shooting. All these methods are dependant on what needs to be eradicated or controlled.
Pest plants and animals can be difficult to control. Plant control and Animal control programmes can last over many years depending on the population density of the plant or animal pest. For some plants the continual threat can come from the potential seed bank in the soil. This means when a programme is implemented it must be continued with for the benefits to be felt.

New technology could save water
The average UK household uses roughly 40 pints of water a day using washing machines, this figure has risen sharply over the last few years, since 1990 washing machine usage has gone up by a massive 23% due to the fact that the average household now washes their clothes on average 4 times a week compared to 15 years ago when it was just 3. Through the UK this equals roughly 750 million pints which would fill over 100 olympic size swimming pools.
In the past many people used commercial laundry equipment in laundrettes to wash their clothes but as washing machines have got significantly cheaper this area has now declined.
The British government has said that it wants to decrease water usage by 2010 but as more and more people look to save time and money this target does
look like being met.
But now there appears to be a way that this could all change. "Xeros" is allready being dubbed the new Dyson, which was the bagless cleaner the re invented the way we cleaned in the mid 90's.
The machine uses only 2% of the water conventional large washing machines use which makes it the first virtually waterless washing machine.
The Researchers at Leeds University where this product is being tested claim the technology could be ready as early as 2009.
It works by the use of thousands of small plastic chips which are around half a centimetre in size which then absorb and remove dirt. Around 20 kilos of these chips are loaded in each wash with a small cup of water, this is then heated to help disolve the dirt and then the chips remove it.
The company behind the product hope this will change the way we wash our clothes and could not only save money but also the environment, it is also hope this technology could be used in commercial dishwashers as well as many other water using household items

While most commercial panels are actually made with silicon, you can build your own home solar panel by using cuprous oxide - copper- which causes light to be turned into electricity. You can use a thin sheet of copper to get your cuprous oxide.

Here's the list of what you need to make your own home solar panel: one square foot of thin copper plate, two alligator clips and short leads of wire, a wide mouth glass jar, tap water and salt. A voltmeter, which measures small amounts of electricity will detect the end result. The copper sheeting needs to be heated on an electric stove or hot plate, to build your own solar panel. Place the copper sheet on the burner and turn it on high and let it sit there for about 30 minutes. As it is heating up, you can see the plate turning colors. It will show the outline of the heating coil underneath the plate. It will get hotter, hotter and hotter, and then it will start to turn really dark until the whole thing has a dark, black coating.
When the sheet is entirely black, turn off the burner and let it sit to cool for about 20 minutes. As the the cuprous oxide cools the black coating will begin to pop off the sheet, leaving a thinnish coating of red on the copper. This red coating is needed to build your own solar panel, and while the majority of the black can be rinsed off under running water, it should not be brushed clean.
Salt Water Helps Produce The Electricity for your home solar panel: Using the alligator clips, connect the copper sheet to one the top of one side of the glass jar. Attach the other clean copper sheet to the other side of the jar. Mix about 2 tbs (tablespoons) salt with hot tap water, dissolve well and then pour it into jar. Be careful the water does not get on the alligator clips. The two copper sheets should be under water with about 1 inch exposed at the top of the car to build your own solar panel.
Your home solar panel is almost done. Carefully, carefully, place the entire item in the sun-light, that means either through the window or outside ,exposed to the sun. connect the voltmeter to the leads to the two alligator clips and you can see the meter indicate the power being generated by sunlight, if you were able to build your home solar panel. CSP - Solar Thermal Electricity
There are two main types of solar power generation methods used to produce electricity on a commercial scale. The four main comercially productive concentrating solar power systems are: parabolic troughs, dish / engine systems, fresnel reflectors and central receiver systems. The technology involved with each is proven and either has been or still is in operation around the world with more developments in solar power in progress to try to meet future demands.
Trough systems work by making use of mirrored troughs that are used to focus the sun’s energy onto a receiver tube that is filled with fluid. The fluids are heated to very high temperatures so that super-charged steam is generated. This steam is then directed into a conventional steam generator to produce electricity.
A trough-based CSP plant typically consists of rows of mirrored troughs placed parallel to each other along a north-south axis in what is known as a collector field. The troughs pivot as they follow the sun to ensure that it is continuously focused on the receiver tubes. Thermal storage is also used to allow electricity generation to continue either when the sun is not shining or after it has set. Technological advancements are continuing to prolong this production period in a bid to move to continuous solar electricity production.
Power plants known as Andasol 1, Andasol 2 and Andasol 3 in Spain all use the parabolic trough design, forming a combined 150MW solar power plant. The surface area of the mirrors used to form the energy collection field of Andasol 3 alone is around 500,000m2.
Dish / engine systems are stand-alone units that contain dish-shaped parabolic mirrors that concentrate the sun’s energy onto a receiver mounted above the dish. The receiver takes the energy and converts it into heat which is then converted into mechanical power, similar to a mechanical engine. Each dish / engine unit has a capacity of around 25kW of solar power and it tracks the sun to ensure optimum power.
An example of the dish / engine technology is the Stirling Energy Systems dish called the Suncatcher that will be used in fields of thousands to form a power facility capable of generating over 500MW of electricity
Fresnel relectors are similar to parabolic troughs except they are flat mirrors that focus light onto one receiver. Costs are reduced using this method because the rows are positioned more closely together, there are fewer moving parts and less receivers are required. The receiver is stationary and it is shared by several mirrors.
An example of a recently commissioned CSP plant using reflector technology is the Kimberlina CSP plant in California developed by Ausra. This 5MW CSP power plant is a demonstration of the technology that will be used in much larger scale developments in the future.
Central receiver systems are also known as power towers. Looking as though they're honoring a higher deity, thousands of mirrors called heliostats cluster around a receiver that sits atop a tall tower. As the energy is directed into the receiver it is used to super-heat nitrate salt mixtures which goes on to produce steam that runs a conventional steam generator. The molten salt can be stored for great lengths of time which means that this type of solar energy generates electricity continuously around the clock.
Solar One, Solar Two and the latest power tower, Solar Tres are all examples of central receiver systems. The Solar Tres power plant will be a 15MW facility and it follows on from the successful demonstration power plant known as Solar Two which was located in the Mojave Desert.
Opponents of solar energy cite cost as a limiting factor, but this is being overcome thanks to technological advancements. Already, concentrating solar power plants hold a huge advantage over the traditional fossil fuelled counterparts in the lower impact to the environment. In fact, one of the only impacts that concentrating solar power plants have on the environment is land use.

How Is Geothermal Energy Turned Into Electricity
Geothermal energy is a renewable energy source from deep within the earth. It has already been used to provide power to 1.2 million homes in the United States. It has far greater potential and to both heat and provide electricity to homes and is yet to be properly utilized. That's about to change.
There is an enormous level of energy trapped beneath the earth's surface coming from a list of sources: movement of continental plates, the planet core and decay of naturally occurring substances within the crust as they slide against and underneath each other. Volcanoes, hot springs and steam vents represent the easily accessible points to this energy but most geothermal energy is trapped under the earth’s crust and must be accessed by drilling into the resource and harnessing the energy. The thermal energy in the uppermost 6 miles of the earth’s crust contains 50,000 times the energy of all the world’s gas and oil resources.
What Is Geothermal Energy?
Geothermal energy is the heat stored under the surface of the earth. In some parts of the world where the earth’s surface is thin or cracked, steam and molten rock can escape. These are usually locations of high seismic activity such as earthquakes and volcanoes. If water finds its way into these cracks, it becomes heated and may come to the surface as geysers, fumaroles, hot springs and mud pots.
Parts of New Zealand, Japan, USA and Europe have high geothermal activity. Electricity is generated using high grade geothermal energy such as geysers, fumaroles, hot dry rocks and mud pots. Geothermal energy can also be used as a heating source, for example in Iceland hot water is brought to the surface through a bore , then sent through insulated pipes into homes and radiator panels which provide heat. Over 80% of homes in Iceland are heated this way.
While geothermal energy is a renewable resource and the creation of electricity does not pollute the air, the actual process can pose serious environmental problems. Scientists are not sure how the long-term use of this resource could affect our underground water supplies. Some geothermal tourist attractions at Rotorua in New Zealand have already suffered a decline in surface activity due to the draw-off of geothermal fluid from the underground reservoir by domestic and commercial uses.
Geothermal energy can be broken down into 4 main types – Geothermal energy can be broken down into 4 main types – hydrothermal, hot dry rock, geopressured and magma.
Hydrothermal
This is the only type of geothermal energy that is currently producing commercial quantities of electricity and is derived from hot water and steam formed in porous or fractured rock at relatively moderate depths from 100 metres to 5 kilometres.
The hot water and steam are formed from the intrusion of molten magma into the earth’s crust or the deep circulation and heating of groundwater through faults and fractures.
To generate electricity, hot water at temperatures ranging from 180 – 250 degrees Celsius is brought from the underground reservoir to the surface through production wells and is flashed to steam in special vessels by release of pressure. The steam is then used by being directed into a turbine engine which turns a generator. Ensuring the water levels are not depleted, the used geothermal water is returned to the reservoir.
Geopressured
Geopressured energy comes from hot, pressurised waters containing dissolved methane, trapped at depths of three to six kilometres in sedimentary formations. The water temperature ranges from 90°C to 200°C.
Three forms of energy can be captured from geopressured sources – hydraulic energy from the high pressure, chemical energy from burning the dissolved methane and thermal energy from the hot water.
Hot Dry Rock
In certain cases granite at a depth of 3 to 5 kilometers beneath the ground can get to 250°C. Unlike hydrothermal resources, the fractures and faults required to conduct water to the surface are not present, therefore water must be pumped into the rock at high pressure to create an artificial underground reservoir of steam or hot water.
Obtaining energy from hot dry rock has not been implemented commercially due to the costs, and questions about resistance of the reservoir to flow, water loss and thermal drawdown remain. Costs are coming down though and geothermal technology in general will improve enough to make hot dry rock economically feasible.
Magma
There is still no practical way of extracting the energy potential from magma. Found at depths from between 3 and 10 kilometers under the earth's surface, magma is molten rock reaching temperatures up to 1200°C. Magma is only accessible where volcanic activity or tectonic plate movement occurs.
The Future Prospect of Geothermal Energy in the US
An exciting new development in the future of geothermal energy in the United States has just been announced by the Department of the Interior who have promised to make 190 million acres of federal land available for geothermal power development. This is good news because the proposed land includes no environmentally sensitive areas such as national parks or designated wilderness areas.
By the year 2015 it is estimated that electricity from geothermal power production in the United States can reach 5,500 MW thanks to this new initiative. It’s a positive move that will promote a form of renewable energy that has been used for years, but perhaps not to its full potential.

Understanding Your Carbon Footprint
There are still many people who have no concept of what a carbon footprint is or how it is produced. The impact we all have on global warming is reflected not only in our personal production of greenhouse gases but in the products we use. This isn’t surprising, it’s just a fact of life that there are many distractions that take place and we take for granted the imprint we are leaving on the world, just by living.
I'll give you a simple personal example of how my family takes energy use for granted. In our house we have multiple digital clocks and they all run 24 hours a day, one in each room - the microwave, the conventional oven, the CD player, the stereo and in each bedroom all has a clock and each one is sucking up passive energy we could be saving, and we don't give it a thought. It’s just one of the assumed “rights” of living in a modern affluent society, we may not use it but we don’t mind paying for it regardless. It may be a little shocking for some people to learn exactly what the level of carbon emissions they produce each year is, as well as the added costs they are incurring simply by being blase about the little things.
If You Don't Know It, You Can't Change It
The previous heading sums up a whole range of human instincts and precisely describes one of the roadblocks in front of those trying to educate people on the importance of reducing our carbon footprint. It’s only when someone is shown the consequence for the actions of their daily lives that they can begin to grasp the idea that there is a need for change.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Sounds good, but are we really doing enough
We live in a throw-away society
We're wasteful. Not just on an individual level, but on a global scale. Our lifestyle is just not sustainable in terms of the world's resources we consume.
The subject of unnecessary waste in our society came sharply into focus for my wife and me over the last couple of years due to numerous trips to take garbage to the county dump.
When we were renovating our cabin we took construction scrap to the dump on a regular basis (along with our wet garbage). We began to notice a considerable number of perfectly good items that had been thrown out. After observing this for a while (and rescuing numerous perfectly good items along the way), we started to ask, "What can we do about it?"
We started changing our habits to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Although we may think we can't make a difference individually, small steps taken on an individual level can and do make a difference. We must each do our own small part to minimize the waste and excess consumption in our society. Change is possible... indeed, it's absolutely necessary.
One of the greatest challenges in doing this is the constant bombardment from the media... the non-stop stream of powerful advertising attempting to convince us that we need the latest and greatest gadgets, toys, electronics, cars, and on and on. It's a powerful and extremely effective influence.
And it seems that, unfortunately, a lot of people are too lazy and/or simply don't think about the fact that something that they are throwing away could be used and appreciated by someone else. Nor do they think about the landfill being taken up by perfectly good and useful items.
Our dump experience spawned the idea of a series of short video vignettes that would highlight this sad situation. Although the topic is serious, we wanted to have a little fun with it in order to highlight the number of perfectly good items that were being thrown into the dump every week. Thus was born "Adventures with Fitzgerald the Dump Truck". The episodes can be seen on the Rustic Lodge Lifestyle home page.
What can you do?
Are you concerned about rampant consumerism and the corresponding waste? If so consider taking some of the following steps:
Turn off
Break free of commercials by limiting your exposure to them... and if you have children, this is even more important. Setting the right example becomes paramount in teaching the next generation that it is not necessary to have the newest, most recent model of everything!
Teach them that happiness does not come from a store! We don't expose ourselves to the onslaught of commercial messages. We rarely watch TV, we listen to public (commercial-free) radio, and have a limited number of subscriptions to magazines that come to the house.
Consequently we are blissfully unaware of so much of the product marketing and thus are not even tempted to rush out to buy this or that "must have" gizmo. We've never had a TV at our country lodge, so when the grandchildren visit, there is no temptation to watch it... it just isn't part of the "lodge experience".
Critically assess your habits
What are you throwing away? Get in the habit of looking critically at all of your household waste. Is it really garbage? Can it be put to use by someone else? Can you compost your wet garbage? Are you recycling everything that you can? We have two or three charities that call us regularly to ask if we have any donations they can pick up. Some of them let us know we can call them any time for an additional pickup of clothing and household items. Check for charities that offer this service in your area.
Taking this simple step would see items such as toys (we've seen full boxes of perfectly good stuffed toys at the dump - some brand new with the tags still on), other toys, bikes, chairs, lamps, tables and other furniture, and much more, put to good use.
Episode one of the "Fitzgerald" series highlights many of the items that we rescued from the dump. Other episodes show many perfectly good items that had been thrown away, but which we personally didn't take.
Challenge each other
Families can get together and set up challenges to minimize waste. At the office, organize a waste awareness day. Get your boss involved... or if you are the boss, you set the tone. Even neighborhoods can activate to increase awareness.
These are just a few suggestions to start the creative juices flowing. Each one of us must start taking individual responsibility to reduce the resource footprint on our fragile planet. Reducing our personal waste by limiting thoughtless consumerism, and through reuse and recycling are important actions we can all take.

In fact, the history of solar energy can be traced back to the Greeks that were then passed on to the Romans which marked the first people to ever use the passive solar design.
Passive solar design is a way to warm the home based on the dwelling’s design. Or something like that. I apologize for that intro but I just can’t help. I figured that if I was going to match one alternative energy resource against the other, then I’ll make some extravagant introduction. Just imagine the drum rolls.
Actually, there is an existing debate among environmentalists and even scientists on which energy resource should be developed first given their advantages and drawbacks. Staying away from the personal biases, numerous studies have shown that overall, wind power is more cost effective than harnessing the sun’s energy. Let’s see the reasons behind that conclusion.
Harnessing the sun’s energy can be done by a number of ways. But probably the simplest way which can be applied in a small home is by using photovoltaic cells or PV or solar cells. What happens is that sunlight hit the surface of a photovoltaic (PV) panel which responds by creating free electrons which is channeled to generate an electric current.
Wind power on the other hand utilizes a propeller and a shaft system which has a magnet wrapped by a coil of wire inside. As the wind turns the propeller and the magnet inside, the electrons in the wire are forced to move along the wire producing an electrical current.
